On its second ever comedy show, the Marble Bar sold out and was standing room only. Given that there's a nice long bar to lean on, standing room isn't too bad at all! The night began with a soft jazz musical act to wind the crowd down a bit after their day at work, this week guitarist Roger Black did the mellow honours. Then it was on with the funnies.
Every mum in Australia should be grateful to Fiona O'Loughlin for showing that mothering doesn't have to be taken oh so seriously. By her own report her style of parenting evokes the escapades of a St-Trinian's-4th-former, which must startle the neighbours at times... Continue reading

Comedy @ Marble BarThe Marble Bar (underneath the Hilton Hotel)
488 George Street, Sydney
6:30 pm Tuesdays
$15 (includes one free drink)
For the first time in far too many years, there's a comedy room in the heart of the city again. And what a room! Sydney institution The Marble Bar, its glamour restored and furnishings updated not too long ago, normally hosts musical entertainment; Lisa Rathbone has persuaded them to vary the menu and offer a night of stand-up comedy every week on Tuesdays, starting at the perfect time to catch people needing their ribs tickled after work.
The opening night line-up was guaranteed to draw a crowd: headlined by UK legend John Moloney, MC'ed by the engaging David Smiedt, and ably supported by veteran mischief-maker Jackie Loeb and popular rising comic Jacques Barrett. A full house turned up in the mood for a good time. Continue reading

Updated Tues 24th June
It's coming up to that time of the year again. Officially the dates of this year's Edinburgh Festival Fringe are 3rd - 25th August 2008, although there are preview seasons for some shows. They're taking bookings for shows now. [link]
The breakaway Comedy Festival being run by the the four biggest venues on the Fringe – Underbelly, Pleasance, Gilded Balloon and Assembly Rooms – is looking strong, although it's ruffling some feathers on the Fringe Committee. So far, acts at these four venues are still on the official Fringe website, but who knows whether they still will be next week?
(Update: edcomfest.com has now gone live listing the shows (and offering bookings) at the four venues above [link] - thanks Sarah for the news! Beware - the search function is pedantic - if you miss a comma it will say "no data was returned")
Here are the results of a search of the various Edinburgh Fringe websites for Australian performers - the performers below are appearing in some of the largest rooms in Edinburgh and some of the smallest, from stand-up to cabaret and back again (I've included expats and immigrants! (update: and now on special request, even a few Kiwis)).
If you're going to be in Scotland for those 3 weeks and want to catch some shows that sound like home I suggest you do a search using the names of the shows below :… Continue reading
